The First and Second Years – An Outline

In the first two years pupils are offered a wide range of subjects in a ‘common course’ which is followed by all pupils regardless of ability, so that they can discover their strengths and weaknesses, likes and aptitudes. The common course will be designed around eight 'modes of experience' within which there can be one or more subjects. This ensures breadth and balance in a pupil’s studies.

In addition, there are certain ‘permeating elements’. These are skills such as the ability to communicate in writing and by the spoken word, to count, to gather and process information from a range of sources, and to solve problems. They also include aspects of personal development (health matters, attitudes of tolerance and understanding, critical appreciation of the media, respect for rules and responsibilities) which are not subjects in themselves but which are developed through the study of the subjects which make up the curriculum.

The first and second year curriculum is arranged as follows:

Classes in S1 and S2 are organised on a mixed-ability basis as in primary school.

In the school year 2009-10, the school will begin to implement the new ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ This will result in changes to the curriculum pattern shown above. These changes are likely to include more ‘blocking’ of courses so that pupils see a smaller number of teachers in a given week, and more inter-disciplinary work. In due course, the new curriculum will cover S3 as well as S1 and S2. This will mean that pupils will not make their subject choices until the end of S3.

S2 - S3 Subject Choice Programme

In second year all pupils will be involved in making decisions about the Standard Grade subjects they are going to study in Third and Fourth year. The range and number of subjects are outlined in the third and fourth year section.

To help them make good choices, all second year pupils follow a careers/subject choice programme delivered by their Pupil Support teacher during Social Education. The Careers Officers are involved in delivering this programme. Topics such as personal strengths, subject likes, using the careers library, investigating jobs, equal opportunities and self assessment are covered.

Before making a final choice every pupil will meets his/her Pupil Support teacher to discuss which subjects are best suited to their individual abilities and future needs. Parents will also have the opportunity to meet with their child’s subject teachers, guidance teacher, careers officer and senior staff at the Parents’ Evening in March. If required, additional dates to meet any of these staff will be arranged. Final choice forms are usually handed in towards the end of March each year. If for staffing or resource reasons a pupil’s subject choices cannot be delivered then full consultation regarding alternative choices will take place with pupils and parents.
